When Bears defensive end Jamal Green flips open his cell phone, it isn’t necessarily to make a call. Green is a chess devotee and in spare minutes he plays a computerized chess opponent. “I haven’t had too many `live’ opponents and everybody I’ve played is probably too experienced for me so it doesn’t end up good.” Green, signed to the Bears’ practice squad last October, is competing for a roster spot. Chess may be helping. “It’s a little slow for me sometimes, but I’m working on my patience. Strategy is one thing, but you also need patience to make it work. My uncles and cousins played chess, but I never got into it. I was more a `Madden’ [football] or ‘NBA Live’ guy. I’ve won one time out of about 50 [chess matches]. That’s why I play the computer: so nobody’ll know.”
