On the eve of the NBA draft, the Tribune’s Sam Smith wraps up a season of answering readers’ NBA questions at chicagosports.com.
“I am hearing speculation that the Sixers are willing to deal Allen Iverson. What do you think of the Bulls trading [Ben] Gordon or [Luol] Deng and the No. 2 pick for him?”
Larry, Chicago
No way, though the 76ers would drive him to Paxson’s house for that. I believe they’ll trade him and get much less than you think he’s worth. He doesn’t fit the Bulls at all because he plays selfishly and doesn’t practice. And he’s got a huge contract and figures to be breaking down the way he plays the game. He’s probably a Hall of Famer but not a fit for the Bulls and, it seems any longer, for the 76ers. His name is all over with serious talks over the weekend of a Boston deal. That fell through, and it seems like the 76ers are too far down the road to turn back now.

“I think that it would be a good idea to trade the 16th pick to Phoenix for their 27th and a second-round pick. That way, the Bulls could still get a big defensive guard like Mardy Collins or Maurice Ager, plus then pick up another big man, possibly James Augustine.”

The history of the draft is that the lower you go, the worse the players get. It only makes sense. There are exceptions, but you are getting too caught up in these college players. They’re not that good.
“I would like for you to explain to me how the projected No. 1 pick in the draft, Andrea Bargnani, is viewed so high from NBA scouts, when he isn’t even the best player in the Italian league he is playing in?”
Robert, Rock Island
It’s why guys like Michael Olowokandi sometimes get picked No. 1. These guys are wrong a lot, and I wouldn’t be surprised come draft day if Bargnani slips the farthest in the draft. Though he could be No. 1, I don’t see him as a No. 1 talent.”
