The cast on the right hind leg of Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro was replaced Tuesday at the University of Pennsylvania’s veterinary hospital for large animals. “His leg looks excellent; the incision has healed well,” said Dr. Dean Richard, the hospital’s chief of surgery, who performed the surgery on May 21 after Barbaro sustained his life-threatening injuries the day before in the Preakness. According to Dr. Richardson, “judging by the radiographs” the graft is taking, callus is forming and the plate and screws have stayed in place.
