A special census that could put more money in the growing village’s coffers tops the list of new projects for the 2006-07 budget.
Village Administrator John Downs is recommending a full special census to add the nearly 2,000 new residents who have moved to Mokena since the last special census in 2004.

The village receives about $120 per person in population-based state revenues, such as sales and motor-fuel taxes, so it doesn’t take long to recover the cost of the extra head-count, Downs said.
He estimated Mokena would get $140,000 extra within a year of the special census and $720,000 within three years.
Village staffers expect the census to be taken in the second quarter of 2007.
