Collin Herring

“THE OTHER SIDE OF KINDNESS”

RATING: THREE SOUND LEVELS

A kind of latter-day Neil Young, Texas troubadour Herring ricochets between folky twang and hard guitar crunch on this lyrically incisive, mournfully sung sophomore album. Stuart Sikes produced, and Herring’s own father plays pedal steel, which explains–somewhat–why the contrasting forms merge pretty naturally. Also following the Young model, there are some orchestral maneuvers, psychedelic reveries and even a little electronica. All that acknowledged, Herring has a lonely-boy voice that’s distinctively his very own.
