When Hurricane Katrina hit, Cindy Law got on the Internet.
“A lot of attention went to New Orleans, and these smaller towns were just devastated as well,” said the former teacher, who said she’s now “just a mom” with two toddlers. “It sounds corny, but I just felt that I was supposed to be doing something.”
After many calls, the Lake Zurich resident found a county official in the town of Bay St. Louis, Miss. When he told her the town needed lots of help, Law went to former Mayor Jim Krischke.
It would be an opportunity to unite the people of Lake Zurich, she told him. He agreed.
“It’s taken off,” she said. “A lot of wonderful people have come aboard and donated.”
A committee of 14 volunteers was formed, and they decided to adopt the town in Hancock County. On Sunday, they will be loading a third truck with cleaning supplies. It will be driven south this week.
Law has frequent conversations with Louis Dunklin, operational manager for Hancock County’s volunteers and donations.
He is grateful that a handful of people in Illinois have not forgotten.
