The Houston area still is hosting about 40,000 Gulf Coast hurricane evacuees in its hotels and motels, but rooms do remain for the determined White Sox fan.

“It may not be downtown, but there will be rooms,” said Joan Johnson, president of the Hotel & Lodging Association of Greater Houston.

Don’t expect too many last-minute deals though.

“I’m sure when you have maximum demand, hotels usually quote their rack rate with no discounts,” she said.

As of Thursday, evacuees occupied about 21 percent of the rooms in greater Houston, she said. And a quilt convention next week, which is expected to draw 50,000 visitors, will stress the system even further, said Jordy Tollett, president and CEO of the Greater Houston Convention and Visitors Bureau.

“It may be a little bit of a challenge finding the rooms, but we can help any fans,” he said. He suggested calling the visitors bureau for assistance at 1-800-4-HOUSTON or 1-800-446-8786.
