Richard Hawley
“Coles Corner”
Hawley’s third solo album marks something of a leap forward. A concept album of sorts, tinged with a palpable nostalgia, the disc presents stories of love and loss set on a popular spot in Hawley’s hometown of Sheffield, England, each hyperromantic and delivered in Hawley’s warm croon. At times it recalls the work of Scott Walker, and when it quiets down, it touches on old soul and country in a way similar to recent Nick Lowe. It’s a beautiful joy throughout, a lush, late-night entertainment that demands a listening partner.
Best track: “Born Under a Bad Sign” is a gorgeous cross between Morrissey and Frank Sinatra.
