I stopped by to deliver a thank-you to a neighbor who makes a habit of helping out, and on the way to the front door, I had to sidestep an industrial-strength boom box that blared on her front walk. I hadn’t heard it before, because we all live in the woods, with lots of creatures, and the trees tend to deaden neighbor noise.
Among the creatures we live with are woodpeckers, which aren’t a problem for those of us with masonry but are a plague for those with wooden siding. And this includes my helpful neighbor, Paula.
So after she answered the door, I said, “Out doing yard work, eh?” assuming that was the reason for the radio. “No,” she said. “It’s for the woodpeckers. I’ve got it on NPR, and even they won’t listen to that.”
