Just as several Northwestern starters have regained their health after a weekend without a game, an old injury has cropped up. Freshman defensive end Corey Wootton is doubtful for Saturday’s game against Wisconsin with a sprained neck.

Wootton was injured in his first start against Northern Illinois on Sept. 10, missed the Arizona State game Sept. 17 and started against Penn State. David Ngene would start in Wootton’s place. . . .

Tuesday’s workout was unusually spirited with a couple of skirmishes featuring running back Brandon Roberson vs. linebacker Malcolm Arrington and offensive tackle Vince Clarke vs. linebacker Tim McGarigle. “They’re anxious to get back at it,” coach Randy Walker said. “Passion is a real important part of this game. You just have to be sure you channel it the right way, so it’s good.”
