The IHSA announced Saturday on its Web site that boys and girls golf tournaments will be conducted as scheduled. Regional play will begin at most sites Monday. The IHSA and a group of 37 private schools suing to halt the organization’s implementation of a multiplier have an outline for an agreement in place and are back in court Monday.

Karate kid

Stevenson senior Mike Roop goes for the gold this weekend in the Shotokan Karate World Championships at Harper College in Palatine.

Roop, 17, of Long Grove, is competing in three divisions and is one of several members from the Illinois Shotokan Karate Club who qualified for the U.S. team.

“I’m real excited, thrilled I have the opportunity to compete for the United States,” said Roop, who earned his spot by finishing first in Kumite (fighting) at the USA-National Karate Federation National Championships and team trials in July in North Carolina.

Trouble at York

The York boys cross-country team easily won its first major meet, the Palatine Invitational, a week ago. But noticeably absent from the Dukes’ lineup was senior Brian Marchese, considered one of the team’s top five runners.

The reason for Marchese’s absence became clear last week when arson charges were filed against him and three others–all York students–by the DuPage County state’s attorney. Also charged was senior Justin Jones, a cross-country runner who was on York’s winning 3,200-meter relay team at the 2005 state track finals.

Recovering

Downers Grove South senior Scott Crider is recovering from his second concussion since June. The senior’s fourth such injury from playing soccer occurred in a Sept. 20 win over Proviso East.

“I’ve had to get a lot of tests,” said Crider, who suffered blurry vision after getting hit by the goalkeeper. “I’m going to have to wear head gear.”
