Of 200 billion drinks sold nationally in recyclable containers each year, only about 5 percent are consumed in cars, according to beverage industry statistics.
But that’s still 10 billion bottles and cans. And because many are probably thrown away at gas stations, Lake County is set to begin a pilot recycling program at four area stations.
“We’ll give them the containers and collect data over a 2-year period and see if we’re doing anything positive to encourage recycling in the county,” said Peter Adrian, recycling coordinator for the Solid Waste Agency of Lake County.
The new, $65 bins are bottle-shaped and have holes designed to accept bottles and cans.
