“Howl”
The Bay Area group’s third album is a much more subdued and soulful effort than the group’s previous slabs of derivative feedback. “Devil’s Waitin'” is a traditional-sounding acoustic blues number, “Promise” an old-style Americana ode to the Band and the conspicuously poppy “Weight of the World” the only remaining song not overtly beholden to blues, folk, gospel and other roots music. It’s a change of pace from the former one-note BRMC, but welcomely so.
Best track: “Promise,” which benefits from its half-familiar piano lead, lazy shuffle of a groove and evocative New Orleans-style horns.
