The Illinois State Toll Highway Authority might be trying to reform its image, but its workers likely won’t be gracing the fashion pages any time soon.

The agency’s board recently approved a $45,000 uniform contract, despite already having a contract with another company to provide work clothes for tollway employees.

Was the tollway looking to secure designer labels? Not exactly.

Turns out the firm already under contract could not provide long-sleeved orange polo shirts.

For safety reasons, the agency wants orange for its maintenance workers and other employees so motorists can spot them more easily.

As far as tollway spokeswoman Joelle McGinnis is concerned, that doesn’t mean the tollway has bad taste in fashion.

“I happen to like the color orange,” she said, laughing.
