Absent from the fashion world in recent seasons–trousers took over the mind-sets of many fashionistas–the newest skirts are full, fresh and feminine.

Look for swing and A-line styles with flared hemlines that swirl and swish. Lengths drop from right below the knees to midcalf or the ankles, in silky-looking rayons, comfortable cottons and finely pleated polyesters. Although a bit longer, they are far from puritan.

For warm weather, skirts take on different moods. Get tropical in a wildly patterned floral. Or look timeless in a retro pattern circle. If you want a romantic look, go for a printed chiffon with a handkerchief hem. And on a perfect summer day or evening, slip into a gauzy, tiered, ankle-length style.

Pair these skirts with T-shirts, layered sleeveless tanks, lace-trimmed camisoles or little crocheted cardigans. Jackets can also top these skirts. Just make certain they are cropped or body-hugging. And avoid wearing a full skirt with a full top, because it can create an unflattering silhouette.
