Buck 65
This Right Here Is
As Buck 65, Richard Terfry may boast the dubious claim
of being Nova Scotia’s best-known MC, but so far his raspy country rap hasn’t made much of an impact in the U.S. “This Right Here Is” collects tracks from two previous Buck 65 albums, no doubt in the hopes that their best tracks combined together would nudge Buck 65 out of the underground. But the U.S. may not yet be ready for a white Canadian rapper, as likely to praise the Bible as quote Woody Guthrie. Buck 65 is best taken at quirky face value–as an unconventional companion to a genre generally predisposed to play it safe rather than play it weird.
Best track: “Roses and Bluejays,” in which Buck 65 tackles the relationship with his father since the death of his mother.
