Nobody’s Watching Nobody’s Listening
The Pernice Brothers’ beautifully orchestrated power pop might not seem like it would translate well live, but Joe Pernice and crew do a surprisingly fine job making his bittersweet but hooky songs work in front of an audience. Despite a nice set list that spans the band’s three albums (and a little bit beyond), the audio half of the set isn’t the disc’s key selling point. Rather, Pernice fanatics will prefer the DVD half of the collection, which is packed with videos, live footage interviews and the kind of stuff that typically gets posted for the faithful on a band’s Web site but is still nice to have in one easy-to-access place.
Best track: “Grudge [bleep],” a particularly biting song from Pernice’s old band the Scud Mountain Boys, reconfigured for his current outfit.
