Blackfield

Blackfield

Porcupine Tree has done more than most to make prog-rock (almost) acceptable again, its music highlighting the link between those ultra-complex and pretentious bands of the past and less overtly complex decedents such as Radiohead. Blackfield is a collaboration between Porcupine Tree’s Steve Wilson and Israeli rock star Aviv Geffen, yet Porcupine Tree fans will probably hear a lot more of the former in the mix–albeit in streamlined form–than the latter. In fact, Porcupine Tree fans will hear a lot of Porcupine Tree in “Blackfield,” period, though “Open Mind,” “Pain” and “Hello” hearken back to PT’s mellower work rather than its slightly more aggressive recent work.

Best track: “Cloudy Now,” a depressing, dreamy track that addresses the miserable state of the world, the miserable state of a family, and, well, an altogether miserable state, like Pink Floyd remade for the Gen-X set.
