Kathleen Edwards
Back to Me
Kathleen Edwards’ “Failer” was the kind of perfectly realized debut that, despite all the acclaim, never quite caught on with a larger audience. The equally excellent “Back to Me” could very well rectify the oversight and hopefully send a few new fans back to her first album too. By singing about losers and drinkers (sometimes including herself), Edwards brings to mind prime Lucinda Williams. A frequently stunning lyricist with a subtle voice capable of projecting hurt one second and inflicting it the next, Edwards decries a summer fling in “Summer Long,” shares the mic with My Morning Jacket’s singer Jim James on “Independent Thief,” tosses out risque double-entendres in the title song, and somehow still manages to end the disc of heartbreak and heartache with a track called “Good Things.”
Best track: “Back to Me,” a song about all the things Edwards is willing to do to win back her ex-lover’s attention.
