In an alternate universe, Kylie Minogue would have gone down as a one-hit wonder, just a tiny Australian soap opera star that had some fluke success with a cheesy bubblegum cover of “Locomotion.” Fortunately, we don’t live in that universe, since Minogue has deftly updated bubblegum pop for the digital age. While she’s recorded enough international hits to span two discs, it’s the more recent stuff on Disc 2–“Come Into My World,” “Love at First Sight,” “Can’t Get You Out of My Head”–that finally broke her in America and helped nudge sophisticated disco back into the spotlight.
Best track: “Come Into My World,” cool Europop that can never be separated from Michel Gondry’s mind-bender of a video.
