LCD Soundsystem

LCD Soundsystem

James Murphy, one half of the production duo the DFA, has been moonlighting in his own punk/funk outfit LCD Soundsystem. After a flurry of cool singles comes this full-length debut, which, if anything, shows LCD Soundsystem sounds better in single-sized bites. Sure, there’s nothing wrong with fun tracks such as “Daft Punk is Playing at My House,” which like much of the album touches on hip influences such as Can, the Fall, Talking Heads and more. But with the exception of a precious few stylistic detours, too much LCD Soundsystem tends to blend into one long disco beat. In many ways the best part of the album is the bonus disc of early singles, like the ironic statement of purpose “Losing My Edge.”

Best track: Last year’s single “Yeah (Crass Version),” not to be confused with Usher’s hit, is a layered epic of squelchy funk that gets more and more manic as it progresses.
