The Moaners
Dark Snack
Why is it that duo acts almost always drop the bass and record as guitar/drum combos? Fortunately, in the case of the Moaners, it doesn’t really matter. Not only is former Trailer Bride member Melissa Swingle’s guitar fuzzed out, her songs swing and pound just fine without a bigger bottom end. “Dark Snack” is pure, raw rock, trashy in all the right places and bluesy in others, a sound hampered only by its similarity to so many other bands currently going the duo route. All’s forgiven, however, when they launch into “Paradise Club,” an audacious rewrite of “House of the Rising Sun” that captures the mood of the original.
Best track: “Talk About It,” which introduces a little sensitivity to the raucous sound.
