The Waifs

A Brief History … Live

Maybe it’s their isolated Western Australia stomping grounds, but the Waifs’ music boasts a lonely campfire quality even the best wandering raconteurs rarely capture. You can hear this coursing throughout the double-disc “A Brief History … Live.” A taste of Willie Nelson’s “Crazy” reveals the band as traditionalists at heart, while a subdued bluegrass run through Bob Dylan’s “Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright” pays tribute to their erstwhile mentor.

Best track: “Bridal Train,” about a Perth girl married off to an American sailor.
