Panopticon
When it comes to metal, there will always be someone louder, faster or, particularly in recent years, slower. Maybe that explains why “Panopticon,” aims more for texture than any of the typical metal traits. The strategy works, with little details such as the almost hidden “Midnight Cowboy”-styled harmonica on “So Did We,” spectral vocals on “Wills Dissolve” and the pretty, ringing (but still distorted) guitars that begin “Backlit.” Plenty of heavy metal gets the heavy part right, but few metal acts are ever this haunting.
