“Seinfeld: Seasons 1-3”

Columbia Tri-Star, $119.96

WHO’S IN IT: Jerry Seinfeld, Jason Alexander, Julia Louis-Dreyfus

RECAP: At long last, one of the most beloved sitcoms debuts on DVD, its first three seasons given the deluxe treatment.

BEST EXTRA: “How it Began,” a great documentary about the show’s origins and evolution that brings in every major behind- and before-the-scenes participant.

SECRETS REVEALED: Even several of the most outlandish scenarios were often drawn from writer and co-creator Larry David’s real life, like how the idea for “The Chinese Restaurant” came when he and Seinfeld were actually waiting in a Chinese restaurant.

FEATURE TO SKIP: “The Seinfeld Chronicles,” the almost unwatchable, uneven and awkward pilot.

TRIVIA: Before it was called “Seinfeld,” it was called “The Seinfeld Chronicles,” and before that simply “Stand-up.”

IF YOU LIKED THIS, TRY: “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” kind of like “Seinfeld,” with cussing.

“The Terminal”

Dreamworks, $39.99

WHO’S IN IT: Tom Hanks, Stanley Tucci, Catherine Zeta-Jones

RECAP: Steven Spielberg takes a truly fascinating true story and over-sentimentalizes it as more conventional Hollywood hokum, albeit hokum of the highest order.

BEST EXTRA: “Waiting for the Flight: Building the Terminal,” about the creation of the film’s full-scale airport terminal set.

SECRETS REVEALED: Almost every material used in the construction of the set–the glass, the steel, the granite–was real, even the escalators, though the roof was made of cheap, leaky plastic.

FEATURE TO SKIP: “Airport Stories,” in which the cast and crew talk about how they spend time in airports. Zeta-Jones shops! No, really?

TRIVIA: The filmmakers received permission to pack their terminal with dozens of real stores, a nice bit of promotional synergy.

IF YOU LIKED THIS, TRY: “Catch Me If You Can,” equally airport-obsessed, but weightier than this.
