Two converted running backs, senior Morris Virgil and junior James Cooper, played key roles as defensive backs for Illinois in last weekend’s victory over Western Michigan. Virgil had five solo and two assisted tackles and the first interception of his career; Cooper had two unassisted and two assisted tackles. One of Cooper’s tackles was a 13-yard sack of Broncos quarterback, Ryan Cubit, while the Illini were protecting their 30-27 lead with 36 seconds remaining.
Virgil, who will be granted another year of eligibility if he graduates in the spring, was elated with his performance.
“If I keep playing hard and making plays and making tackles and doing my assignments we’re going to win,” he said.
In addition to his work at safety, his block wiped out the last would-be tackler when Pierre Thomas was running back the opening kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown.
