In television’s latest creative odd pairing, “Alias” mastermind J.J. Abrams and “Saturday Night Live” veteran Cheri Oteri are reportedly teaming up on a comedy project for ABC.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Abrams came up with the original half-hour premise for Oteri, and the duo has had at least one informal meeting. Emmy-nominated writer-producer Carol Leifer (“Seinfeld,” “The Larry Sanders Show”) also is expected to be involved with the project.
Although all of Abrams’ shows, including “Felicity” and the soon-to-debut “Lost,” have featured at least some measure of humor, this would be the writer-director-producer’s first foray into the half-hour comedy format.
In addition to keeping an eye on both the fourth season of “Alias” (set to premiere in January) and the first season of “Lost,” Abrams also is preparing to shoot the pilot for the bounty hunter dramedy “The Catch” with Greg Grunberg and Orlando Jones, as well as getting set to make his feature-film directing debut with Tom Cruise in the sequel “Mission: Impossible 3.”
