Northwestern coach Randy Walker is adamant about players pointing thumbs (at themselves), not fingers (at others). Monday, he led by example.
Walker shouldered some of the responsibility for Thursday’s 48-45 double-overtime loss at Texas Christian, saying he and the coaches didn’t give the Wildcats enough full-speed scrimmaging in training camp, so NU was not ready for TCU’s speed.
“We did not give our kids a chance to play at that speed,” Walker said. “Our coaching and preparation style hurt us in this game. We did very little full-go tackling, and the No. 1 defense had just a handful of plays in a live scrimmage situation.”
Also, quarterback Brett Basanez was named Big Ten offensive player of the week. He had 548 yards of total offense, the second-highest figure in Big Ten history, in a double-overtime loss at TCU.
