Jack Smithson scored 3 goals–the 5th hat trick of his career–and Matt Tutich added 2 goals and an assist for the hosts (2-0-1). “It’s a good feeling knowing that every game someone is coming at you,” Smithson said. Peter Grasso added a goal for Hinsdale while Carlos Bucio scored for Juarez.

Best of West Tournament Mike Piazza scored 4 goals and Sam Vanaria and Paul Boyle added goals for Sandburg (1-1). Mike Nejedly recorded his first shutout of the season. “We played pretty much spotless defense,” Sandburg coach Jack Ferraro said “We did a great job.”

Best of West Tournament

Chris Kammo’s 3 goals, Josh Swanson’s goal and 3 assists and Mike Brennan’s goal lifted Neuqua Valley (2-0-1). Goalkeeper Bradley Sommer made 8 saves. “[Bradley] was very busy [Thursday],” Neuqua Valley coach Jimmy Johns said. “More than usual and he made great saves. He is the anchor of our defense.”

A.J. Hardrick ran 87 yards for a TD and Jarvis Taylor 3 yards for another score as Simeon improved to 2-0. Nate Bell, who set up Taylor’s TD with a 70-yard kickoff return, added his own TD with a 5-yard run. For CVS, K.J. Jones had a 5-yard TD run and 6-yard TD reception.

Jr. QB Harry Rodriguez threw 1 TD pass and ran for another score to lift Mather (2-0). Rodriguez hit Josh Blackwell on a 12-yard pass to open the scoring in the 2nd and ran 4 yards in the third for the other TD. “I didn’t know what to expect, we’re very young on defense,” Mather coach Pat Swiatley said.

Jeannette Abbott had 8 kills and Jill Mitchell added 4 aces, 18 assists and 2 kills for Downers South (2-0). “I was happy with the team all around,” Downers South coach Colleen O’Neil-Reagan said. “Jill Mitchell, our setter, is doing a great job moving the ball around and getting it to the open hitter.”
