The women with the local theater group Babes With Blades are used to fighting. These 13 actresses are trained to sword fight and throw punches on stage. But too many women, says member Jen Albert, don’t know how to defend themselves.

“Women don’t realize it’s OK to hit something,” she says. “Hitting is not a bad thing.”

For three hours Aug. 29, The Babes will host a self-defense workshop and teach other women how to fight. A martial arts instructor will lead the free event and Albert says The Babes will leave their swords at home.

The workshop is The Babes’ second and Albert says they plan to host it quarterly. Like stage combat, Albert says self-defense is a skill that needs practice.

“If you don’t use your skills, you forget them,” she says.

The workshop begins at 12:30 p.m. at Sheil Park, 3505 N. Southport Ave. Call 773-392-8414 to register.
