The Million, Beverly D. and Secretariat Stakes bring out the biggest names in the thoroughbred world

1. Maktoum brothers, Dubai owners

Sheikh Mohammed, Sheikh Maktoum, Sheikh Hamdan and their Godolphin Racing Inc. Stable have established an unparalleled racing empire during the past quarter century. They dominate English racing, and they have made Dubai into a thoroughbred world capital.

2. Dermot Weld, Irish trainer

Weld has won major races in Europe, the U.S., Asia and Australia, and more races in his native Ireland than any trainer in history.

3. Frankie Detorri, English jockey

Detorri not only is Europe’s most accomplished rider, he also is a two-time winner of the world’s richest race–the Dubai World Cup–and a winner of three Breeders’ Cup races in the U.S.

4. Aidan O’Brien, Irish trainer

In 2001 he won 22 of the 78 Group I races in Europe. Highlighting his 25-start U.S. Breeders’ Cup resume are three wins, four places and three shows.

5. Andreas Schutz, German trainer

The German amateur jockey champion in 1987, he later succeeded his father, Bruno, as the trainer of one of the largest stables in Germany. He has won three straight trainer titles and captured the Singapore International Cup with his Million candidate, Epalo.
