Teachers and journalists have a special affinity. We all provide information, but we also interpret and debate events and ideas. We are animated by a shared sense that education is equal parts teaching and learning. Ours is not a solitary learning, but one that is collective, dynamic and ever-evolving.

With so many of us here on staff having parents who are teachers–at every level, from elementary school to university– it’s not surprising that we focus this year’s back-to-school issue on the education of teachers.

Assembled in the photo are our staff members who are the children of teachers, including (from left) Desiree Chen, whose mother, Donna, taught English and whose father, Hollis, taught electrical engineering at Ohio University; Jessica Reaves, whose mother, Debbie, taught English at The Winchester-Thurston School in Pittsburgh; David Syrek, whose father, John, was a health teacher and coach at Trinity High School in Pennsylvania; Leah Eskin, whose father, Gerald, once taught marketing and now teaches ceramics at the University of Iowa: Don Terry, whose mother, Jeanne, taught history and, more recently, conflict resolution into her 80s at several Chicago schools; and Brenda Butler (not in photo, as jury duty called), whose mother, Luzella, was a 3rd-grade teacher and vice principal at Oates Elementary School in Houston.
