Merv Griffin has won fame and made his fortune as a TV talk-show host and the creator of the game show “Jeopardy.” Now the owner of more than 50 horses on his California ranch hopes to add “owner of Kentucky Derby winner, Skipaslew” to his resume. The grandson of 1977 Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew will be carrying Griffin’s silver-and-blue colors in Saturday’s Illinois Derby at Hawthorne Race Course, and the colt’s performance will determine whether or not he goes on to run in the 130th Kentucky Derby on May 1. “There’s nothing like winning a race,” Griffin told Thoroughbred Times after Skipaslew won the Golden Gate Derby. “I’d rather be in the winner’s circle than at Carnegie Hall.”
