Gary Sinise’s small-screen career could be coming full circle, thanks to the popularity of crime TV.

The native Chicagoan, who co-founded Steppenwolf Theatre in 1974 and began his Hollywood directing career in 1986 with two episodes of the TV series “Crime Story,” may be the star cast member of “CSI: New York.”

Industry reports say Sinise has been in talks with CBS and producers to headline the next installment of the hit crime franchise. Although discussions nearly broke down, the conversations have resumed, The Hollywood Reporter says.

The network needs to get preliminary casting under way soon if “CSI: New York” will follow the blueprint that helped turn “CSI: Miami” into a smash spinoff from the original “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.” If so, the spinoff episode–expected to be the season’s penultimate hour in May–will feature a crime that begins in Miami and has connections with New York, easing the way for a new team of investigators.
