The new book “You Know He’s a Keeper, You Know He’s a Loser: Happy Endings and Horror Stories From Real-Life Relationships” recently landed on my desk. Of course, I zoomed in on the tales of true-love duds, compiled by Linda Lee Small and Norine Dworkin. We women want to hear about loser lover boys so we can feel better about our own pathetic picks.

However, this book unfairly tags guys with the loser label. The following tales make you wonder who the real losers are:

– A stripper–OK, “exotic dancer”–is outraged because her proud fiance wants to take Christmas party guests to the strip club where she works. You can practically hear her stomping her feet as she whines, “But it’s Christmas.” Gotta love it when strippers take the high moral ground (sometimes there’s even a stage and pole involved).

– An engaged woman’s future mother-in-law tells the woman’s mom that the groom-to-be, a Marine, has gotten another woman pregnant. When the engaged woman confronts her man, he “naturally” denies it (maybe because he’s telling the truth?). “But I didn’t believe him and called off the wedding,” she declares. The story’s title? “A Girl in Every Port.” Nothing in the story explains why this guy is branded a playboy. And why would a woman believe her future in-law over her present fiance? We’re hoping there’s oceans of stuff we don’t know about this tale.

– A “Banana Republic-type” woman is mortified when her guy “suggested I change my look.” Apparently envisioning a future wearing trailer-trash tanks and shorty shorts, she spits out: “I don’t have a problem with my look, you do!” She dumps him, saying he has no respect for her. I’m baffled. When a woman tries to change her guy’s looks, he winds up on “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.”

In short, I could come up with better loser-guy tales in my sleep. (That’s where half of them happened anyway.)
