Rob Lowe, who played an oh-so-serious lawyer in “The Lyon’s Den” this season, is switching professions and lightening up a little for his next TV gig.
Lowe will play the title character in “Dr. Vegas,” a CBS drama pilot about an in-house physician at a Las Vegas casino, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The network ordered the pilot presentation contingent on casting; Lowe’s involvement should remove that caveat.
“Dr. Vegas” comes from writer John Herzfeld (“15 Minutes,” “2 Days in the Valley”) and producers Lawrence Bender (“Pulp Fiction”), Kevin Brown and Mark Sennet. It will center on the cases a casino’s in-house doctor handles.
Given the nature of Las Vegas, it’s likely the show will have a less somber tone than “The Lyon’s Den,” which misfired on NBC in the fall. “Den” was Lowe’s first project after he left “The West Wing” during the 2002-03 season.
Lowe next stars in TNT’s adaptation of “Salem’s Lot,” due later this year.
