Heart disease kills 1 in 3 women, more than all cancers combined. And stroke is not far behind. Fortunately, though, heart disease can be prevented, by reducing risk factors and making lifestyle changes.

If you would like to jump-start your healthy-living plan, the National Woman’s Heart Day Health Fair on Friday will offer information about reducing risk factors.

Free screenings for cholesterol, blood glucose and blood pressure will be offered from 8:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Chicago, 131 E. Wacker Drive.

Seminars will be presented on such topics as smoking cessation, obesity, diabetes, nutrition, fitness and stress management. There will also be dozens of exhibits and heart-healthy cooking demonstrations.

The fair is sponsored by Sister to Sister: Everyone Has A Heart Foundation Inc., a non-profit organization that aims to boost awareness of heart disease.

Women, and sometimes their doctors, often don’t recognize heart-disease symptoms because they are different than men’s symptoms.
