The Village Board this week unanimously approved one of the largest commercial developments in New Lenox. Despite objections from some neighbors, the board gave the go-ahead to a 36-acre commercial development on the south side of U.S. Highway 30 near Schoolhouse Road with free-standing Target and Lowe’s Home Improvement stores.
There plan includes five buildings facing U.S. 30 and a 15,000-square-foot strip mall behind those buildings abutting a neighboring subdivision.
Trustees limited uses on the site and will not allow drive-throughs or auto-related uses.
Trustee David Smith told developer Ryan Companies of Lisle to do additional landscaping to buffer nearby residents.
The village will forgive 50 percent of its portion of sales-tax revenue for the first three years and 60 percent the following 11 years, with a cap at $4.5 million.
In exchange, the developer will improve U.S. 30 the length of the property and add signals at the entrance. The stores are projected to open in 2005.
