Forget Iran and North Korea. George W. Bush should declare the American Football Coaches Association the next front in the battle to spread democracy around the globe. You can still argue whether the Trojans are America’s best team.

Oklahoma and LSU certainly would, though Michigan was left with little doubt.

“You saw them,” lineman Tony Pape said. “They deserve 100 percent of the national championship.”

But barring a sudden attack of conscience by the coaches, the Trojans will get only 50 percent. That’s because the AFCA, whose members vote for the ESPN/USA Today poll, agreed before the season that its crystal trophy would go to the winner of the BCS title game. Who knew by the time the computers stopped whirring, a more deserving team would emerge?

Egg, meet face.

The question the 63 coaches who vote now face is what’s more important–doing what the governing council says. Or doing what their conscience says.

The coaches should have the freedom we all enjoy. They should be able to vote whom their hearts and minds say is the best candidate.
