When last we heard from Edie Brickell, way back in 1994, the Texas-born singer had split with the New Bohemians, but was still clinging to the band’s wordy, highly caffeinated, slightly eccentric roots-pop. The mesmerizing “Volcano,” which was produced as a torchy song cycle by Charlie Sexton, suggests she thought carefully about which settings would best flatter her trembly, inherently woeful voice. There’s much less instrumental dazzle and much more space .
She just lets the easygoing songs roll along, and that makes all the difference.
