Amy Allison

No Frills Friend

With her New York nasality, Amy Allison sounds more like Fran Drescher than a classic country singer; the voice takes some getting used to. One thing’s for sure, though: On her second solo album, the daughter of jazz-blues great Mose Allison continues to make thoroughly captivating music. If there’s far less twang this time–the pedal steel of 2001’s “Sad Girl” is gone–Allison still writes with unadorned directness. And as she sings, that unconventional voice has an affecting, open-hearted quality that is perfectly suited to the songs.
