Neuqua Valley put on a clinic in a 5-0 win over Benet Academy in Best of the West tournament pool play Thursday at Naperville North.
The Wildcats quickly established control of the ball. Applying unrelenting pressure, they broke open the contest with four goals in a 14:35 span.
Brent Madawick began the scoring on a nifty curl move 15 yards out after a throw-in from Andrew Monteith at 25:35 of the first half. Monteith assisted again when he collected a rebound and passed to Scott Shugh at 21:12. Drew Degurian (from Justin O’Bryan) and Chris Kammo (Sulav Singh) capped the scoring run. Andrew Harner finished the scoring (Kevin Carney) with 5:23 left in the game.
“It’s was a lot of fun today,” Degurian said. “Things are starting to click. I thought we were able to dictate the speed and the play rather well. If we keep on playing and improving at this rate, we’ll be definite strong contenders for state”
Coach Jim Johns praised the Wildcats’ defensive effort.
“Defensively, I think we were really tough,” Johns said of defenders Sulav Singh, Nick Coulson and Greg Yao. “They’re all fast. They’re all fairly confident in the air; they don’t let the ball bounce. And they all can handle the ball. It starts from our defense.”
The Red Wings (1-2) played without three starters, two due to illness and the other a red card suspension. In the nightcap, Naperville North defeated Lincoln-Way East 4-0. Cary Lucibello scored two goals for the Huskies (1-1).
