Dog warning signs keep crowds down

Signs warning visitors of dangerous dogs roaming the Dan Ryan Woods apparently scared off many Memorial Day picnickers Monday, with prime barbecue and parking spots left vacant.

“I can’t believe it,” picnicker Carla McKenzie said as she prepared to pitch a small tent near the south end of the preserve. “Normally, we wouldn’t have found a spot this late in the day. But it looks like people must still be afraid.”

The Cook County Forest Preserve District beefed up patrols and posted warning signs about the dogs after the January attacks of two women, one of whom was fatally injured.
