The Wabash Bridge over the Chicago River will reopen to traffic Friday afternoon after a $9 million reconstruction that began in April 2002.
The bridge, built in 1930, received a complete overhaul, including new structural steel, concrete-filled grating and sidewalks. The mechanical and electrical systems also were renovated, and the bridge houses were restored.
The Wabash Bridge is a double-leaf trunnion bascule bridge, which means it opens with one end rising while the other falls.
