After his team’s 85-70 loss to host Fenwick on Saturday afternoon, Benet coach Peter Paul conceded that the second-ranked Friars pose a problem that he can’t solve.
“I don’t know how to stop them,” Paul said. “Inside and out, they have the total package.”
When the No. 13 Redwings double-teamed Fenwick center Erin Lawless, guard Kristin Heidloff took advantage of the many open looks she had in the first half, hitting five three-pointers to score 23 of her 27 points. The Friars (19-1, 5-0) went into halftime of the East Suburban Catholic game with a 57-41 lead.
“Every game, someone else on our team steps up,” Heidloff said. “This is the point in the season where we’re playing our best basketball.”
With 5 minutes 22 seconds left in the third quarter, Lawless (17 points) hit two free throws to put Fenwick ahead 63-43. That was the same amount the Friars scored in Friday night’s 63-55 victory over Indianapolis Brebeuf.
“It was a fun game,” said Fenwick coach Dave Power, who attributed a lower-scoring second half to an extended halftime. The delay was caused when a torn net on the Fenwick side of the court had to be replaced. Power jokingly said his team’s hot shooting burned a hole in it.
Amy Hunckler led Benet (17-3, 3-2) with 27 points, and Chandra Smith added 22.
