Warren coach John Stanczykiewicz labeled senior Amy Wessel the dictionary definition of a “streak shooter,” and Thursday she hit a streak at the perfect time–in the final seconds of the second overtime.
Wessel hit back-to-back three-pointers–the first with 37 seconds left, then again 14 seconds later–as the host Blue Devils (16-4, 4-1) rallied late to defeat Stevenson 44-42 in the North Suburban Lake.
“The first [three-point play] was called to me and I just felt it,” said Wessel, who finished with eight points. “I then told coach that, if I’m open, I’m hitting it.”
Wessel’s buckets answered Stevenson’s 42-38 lead in the second overtime. It was 38-38 after the first overtime and 36-36 after regulation play.
“The kids really worked hard, but I’m disappointed in our lack of poise at the end,” Stevenson coach Frank Mattucci said. “We can’t afford to lose anymore in conference.”
Warren freshman Giulanna Lopez led all scorers with 16, including 10 in the first half as the Blue Devils built a 20-14 halftime lead. Amy Peters added 12, including the first two points of the second half, giving Warren the game’s biggest lead at 22-14.
But Stevenson (10-9, 3-2) quickly answered with an 11-2 run and took a 26-25 deficit into the fourth quarter. Julia Hamilton led the Patriots with 12 points, while Erin Murtha and Linda Andjelkovich each added 10.
“It was not pretty, but it was a win nonetheless,” Stanczykiewicz said.
