– Winnetka’s Alexis Wooster stopped a legend Friday. The 19-year-old sophomore at Tulane and 2000 Class AA state high school champ from New Trier defeated Salley Wessels of downstate Mt. Morris 3 and 2 at Champaign Country Club to claim the Illinois Women’s State Amateur in her first attempt.
Wessels, a four-time Illinois State Senior Amateur winner, was trying to capture her first Women’s State Amateur crown since 1977.
“The key was making two clutch putts on 14 and 15 to save par and stay 1-up,” said Wooster.
After watching Wooster hole a six-foot putt on 14 and a 10-footer on 15 to retain her 1-up advantage, Wessels three-putted 16 to go 2 down with two holes to play. Wooster then parred the 17th to close out the match.
