If you’ve been “resting” your career, it’s time to review your efforts and start again.
After all, we clean out our homes in the spring–why shouldn’t we do the same for our work lives?
How’s your career going? If things could be better, take some time now to evaluate your situation and start on a new course.
Here are some checkpoints to consider in your job search:
– Do you have a target for your search? A realistic job target will include a title or range of duties, a salary range and a geographic territory.
Without these elements, you are not prepared to conduct a results-oriented search. Once you have a target, you will be able to contact potential employers without waiting for an opening to be posted.
– Are you meeting new people? You should be meeting several a week. Otherwise, you are starving your job search of its lifeblood.
If you remember that most people get their jobs through other people, you will be better able to focus on the importance of making new connections.
– Has it been a while since you landed an interview? Check to be sure that you are sending out a steady stream of resumes, sending resumes to the right people and for the right jobs, and following up to specifically ask for an interview.
– Have you been getting interviews but no offers? Find someone who can review your interview strategy and practice key answers. And be sure you are asking for the job in each interview.
Circle one or two itemsin the above list to really think about. What strikes you as an area that needs improvement? What can you do about it? When will you get started?
