`Meowzart’ music
At a concert called “Do Re Meowzart,” everyone will get into the act. Members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Chicago Symphony Chorus will perform. Maia Wilkins and Davis Robertson, members of the Joffrey Ballet of Chicago, will wear bold red and black attire to perform an excerpt from Borodin’s “Prince Igor,” and they will don pale yellow costumes to dance to the lyrical music of “Edelweiss” from “The Sound of Music.” Members of the audience can sing along to “Edelweiss” and also to “Do-Re-Mi.” Mascots Woofgang and Meowzart won’t be left out. They will provide a rousing version of the cancan to music by Offenbach.
“Do Re Meowzart,” 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Symphony Center, 220 S. Michigan Ave., $4-$8; 312-294-3000.

Pre-syrup maples
On a walk through the woods with a naturalist, families will take a close look at the maple trees to see if there are any buds breaking through. They will learn how the trees, which had lost their leaves in the fall, spent the winter in a dormant state and why sap starts to rise up in them in the spring. All of this is a preview of coming attractions: the time when the trees are tapped to gather enough sap to make maple syrup.
“Sap’s Rising,” 1:30 p.m. Sunday, River Trail Nature Center, 3120 Milwaukee Ave., Northbrook, free; 847-824-8360.
