Safety James McGill, a junior-college All-America from Bakersfield, Calif., signed a letter of intent Friday with Illinois, becoming the 22nd member of coach Ron Turner’s recruiting class. McGill’s signing means Riverside-Brookfield quarterback Tim Brasic, who chose Illinois over Minnesota and Northern Illinois on Thursday, will be a walk-on next fall unless another player leaves school and frees up a scholarship.

Boxing: Former champion Thomas Hearns is trying to lure the Mike Tyson-Lennox Lewis fight to Michigan, filing paperwork with the state requesting to stage a bout at the Pontiac Silverdome on April 6.
